I have read with great care the preliminary report on hyaline membrane disease which Dr. J. Chu and collaborators have published in your May issue. It is indeed a pleasure to see the mention of reflex pulmonary vasoconstriction by other members of the profession as the "crucial functional abnormality" involved in this condition. The following considerations are made with a view to criticizing in a constructive way some of the interpretations elaborated by the authors in explaining their data.
