PROPOSALS FOR A DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION FOR CHILDREN

Mary D. Ames M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Rehabilitative Services, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

A department of rehabilitation for children is designed to offer the child with multiple problems from whatever cause the opportunity to achieve his potential in his pursuit of happiness as a contributing adult. This begins with his complete medical, psychological, and environmental evaluation by well-qualified specialists. The pediatrician, as director, distills the findings and recommendations of the various disciplines into a long-term program of management to extend throughout the school years. The doctors in the hospital and in the community co-operate to supervise the child's growth and development through the local therapeutic, social, and educational agencies. Re-evaluations at designated intervals are an integral part of this longitudinal program. By-products of such a program are better informed and trained personnel—both medical and paramedical.
