Iatrogenic Hypophosphatemia in Infants with Renal Insufficiency

Hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia are commonly associated with glomerular insufficiency. Provision of a reduced dietary phosphate intake to infants with renal insufficiency has been greatly simplified by the availability of low phosphate containing proprietary milk formulas. Caution should be exercised in combining the oral administration of aluminum hydroxide gel with these low phosphorus formulas lest excessive hypophosphatemia result.
