Editor's reply: Although Dr. Van Leeuwen's request is understandable, we have no information not already available in standard books and journals with which to answer it. We have not used magnesium sulfate enemas, believing the theoretical argument for doing so not sufficiently convincing to make up for lack of laboratory data or controlled clinical trial. Our experienced colleagues have taken the same view. Accordingly, we chose to publish Dr. Silverman's wise plea for skepticism (Pediatrics 35: 369) and to await better evidence for or against modifying standard treatment for this varied and complex disease.
