Dr. Cornblath presents insufficient data in his letter to draw any sound conclusions about the effect or lack of effect of parabiosis on carbohydrate metabolism. I emphasized that the smaller members of parabiotic pairs are malnourished. It is on this latter point that speculations were based, for as Dr. Cornblath has shown, it is in malnourished neonates that hypoglycemia is apt to appear. We have found that specific organ abnormalities which may contribute to hypoglycemia in small twins are also found in malnourished single-born infants and in infants who have experienced alimentary malnutrition after birth.
