In the July issue, Juanita Turk's article "Impact of Cystic Fibrosis on Family Functioning" (Pediatrics, 34:67, 1964) provided an interesting example of how the distress experienced by families varies with the resources available for coping with the stress.
Working with many low-income families in a cystic fibrosis center, I have seen a different population of families from the white collar and professional parents of the NIH group. The emotional response of parents to a child's having a potentially fatal condition need not be elaborated.
