Biopsy of the labial mucous salivary gland provides a microscopic observation of the typical acquired pathology of the mucous glands in patients with cystic fibrosis. It is potentially a powerful test in the diagnosis of the disease and may be more valuable than the duodenal aspiration test of pancreatic insufficiency in discriminating patients with cystic fibrosis from patients who have other diseases with similar symptoms.
