Results of treatment of 73 consecutive cases of tetanus admitted to a pediatric service during 1948-1962 are presented. A reduction in mortality for all ages from 52% during 1948-1955 to 24% during 1956-1962 was achieved. Excluding newborn infants, a reduction in mortality from 44% to 9% was achieved. A survival rate of 64% was attained in tetanus of the newborn during 1956-1962. The treatment program used is outlined. A review of causes of death in fatal cases and of significant complications in survivors suggests that even further lowering of tetanus mortality is possible through improvement in this approach to treatment, with continuing emphasis upon a total patient care regimen by an interested and devoted team rather than upon any individual aspect of treatment.
