TWO YEARS, TEN MONTHS, AND TWO DAYS OF ACCOMPLISHMENT ON BEHALF OF THE HANDICAPPED

Robert E. Cooke M.D.1

1 The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland

TODAY I speak with great personal sadness and humility concerning two years, ten months, and two days of accomplishment for the handicapped. Yesterday I called Dr. Denhoff and told him that because of my friendship with the President's family and my acquaintance with the President I did not feel I could or should speak today. A few hours later I changed my mind—I am glad I did so, because I am given an opportunity to say things I could not say at any other time. Though I am totally inadequate to eulogize President Kennedy, I probably know as well as anyone what he has contributed to the handicapped. Many tributes will be paid to many aspects of his life—his interests, his beliefs, his accomplishments.
