A safe, simple and effective method of objectively measuring the functional capacity of children with congenital heart disease is now available. This study shows that as a group, these children have a decreased working capacity. The reduction is most marked in those patients with severe obstructive lesions, pulmonary hypertension or cyanosis. A comparison of pre- and post-operative working capacities in a small group of children shows that the majority improved following corrective surgery. There are apparently other factors involved than anatomic repair of the defects, however. The working capacity test provides a means whereby objective evidence of the functional results of surgery can be evaluated.
