Toxic Reactions and Clinical Usefulness of Diphenylhydantoin

DORA CHAO M.D.1

1 The Blue Bird Circle Children's Clinic, Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas

The articles on fatal reactions to diphenylhydantoin (Dilantin) were interesting and informative (Pediatrics 30:592, 595, 1962). However, it is to be feared that many practitioners who read these articles will become alarmed and will be dissuaded from use of this medication. Approximately 2,500 children have been treated with diphenylhydantoin at Blue Bird Clinic. To date, no fatal reaction has occurred. The incidence of such complications must be quite low.
