We appreciate Dr. Diamond's comments and agree with him in principle. The matter of what level of hemoglobin is acceptable as the bottom of the "normal" range at one year is not easily settled, which is why we stated "if one accepts an arbitrary level of 10 gm." We too feel that no level may be arbitrarily applied in any measurement with such wide individual variation. While other hematologic data were available on all subjects, the tables were already so bulky as to give us pause in requesting publication space for them beyond the hemoglobin and MCHC values, especially since none of the other determinations, including reticulocyte and erythrocyte counts, packed cell volumes, and the other indices that may be derived from them disagreed with or added materially to the data presented.
