Connelly et al., in their recent article on neonatal hyperphosphatemia (Pediatrics, 30:425, 1962), came to the conclusion that "an effect of the hormone was evident on day three, the clearance of the treated infants being significantly greater than that of the controls. . . ." They go on to say: "The increase in approximately four liters in filtration attributable to hormone effect is quite adequate . . . to explain the entire difference . . . between the phosphate excretion of the treated and control infants. . . ."
I believe that these conclusions cannot be justifiably made from the available data. The creatinine clearance of control infants on day three varies from 6.48 to 30.09 liters/24hours/ 1.73m2, a fivefold variation.
