PLASMA-CELL HEPATITIS

Case Report with Immunologic Studies

Thomas S. Bumbalo M.D.1, Joseph A. Bellanti M.D.1, and Kornel L. Terplan M.D.1

1 Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology, University of Buffalo School of Medicine, and Children's Hospital, Buffalo

A 12frac12 year old girl had plasma-cell hepatitis, with features of chronic liver disease and plasma cell infiltration of the liver, arthritis, hypergammaglobulinemia, and a weakly positive LE cell phenomenon. The patient showed a good clinical response to steroids, and maintenance therapy has been continued with them. Immunofluorescent studies, by means of the indirect staining techniques of Coons, with patient's serum and cryostat cut sections of monkey liver have revealed staining of liver nuclei, bile canaliculi and a diffuse cytoplasmic staining. The findings in this case are presented with a brief discussion of some of the current theories on pathogenesis.
