Proctological conditions are not uncommon in the pediatric age group and in many cases may present a challenging diagnostic problem. An example of this is the symptom of rectal bleeding. Approximately 10% of cases present with bleeding per rectum during infancy may be of obscure origin. These children may undergo painful and expensive investigations, such as barium enemas and hematologic tests, and may remain hospitalized for a week or more.
This is probably due to lack of proper investigation of the anal canal.
