In Reply: Management of Otitis Media

Charles F. Ferguson M.D.1

1 Boston, Mass.

Dr. Chamberlin's letter brings up an obviously controversial subject. It does not, however, seem surprising that the articles he refers to are by otolaryngologists, since it is the otolaryngologist who sees the complications of otitis media, not only intracranial in origin, but also the complications of resultant hearing impairments, which I mentioned in my article. It is certainly true that most cases of otitis media will respond to antibiotic therapy given properly by the pediatrician, and many cases of bulging ear drums, as I stated in my article, will subside without myringotomy.
