Feeding of Soybean Product and Development of Goiter

Van Wyk et al. have recently reported an infant who developed goiter and hypothyroidism while being fed a soybean product (Mull-Soy®). Although soybean milks have been used extensively for a number of years, this report and that of Rawson are the only reported instances of soybean goiters in humans. Consequently it may be of importance to report that during the past 5 months we have observed three children with thyroid enlargement which is apparently related to the intake of a soybean milk (Mull-Soy®). Although all of the children have been clinically euthyroid, they have had avid uptakes of I131 and somewhat low protein-bound iodine in the serum.
