This volume, containing some 17 chapters, all by outstanding investigators, gives a broad survey as well as much factual and interpretive detail in a difficult and complex field of biology. The discussions lay much stress on methods of purification and identification. These problems are central to all the facets of the areas treated, which include specific structural types of mucopolysaccharides and those of various sources such as of botanical, bacterial, hematologic, urinary and epithelial origin. Of particular interest to students of disease are the chapters on the pharmacologic aspects of the polysaccharides, and those dealing with the alterations in plasma, and polysaccharides found in urine in pathologic states, and those found in milk.
