INFANTILE HEMANGIOENDOTHELIOMA OF THE LIVER

Report of Three Cases

Diane W. Crocker M.D.1 and Robert S. Cleland M.D.1

1 Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and the Department of Pathology, University of Southern California School of Medicine

Three cases of infantile hemangioendothelioma of the liver are reported, one with spontaneous regression. In two cases there was cardiac hypertrophy, dilatation and failure, presumably due to arteriovenous shunting within the tumor.

Clinical and pathologic aspects are discussed.

The similarity of this tumor to the infantile hemangioma of the skin is cited and a similarity of natural evolution suggested.

Therapeutic and prognostic implications of such a natural course are discussed.
