Symposium on Rheumatic Fever

An unusually concise and authoritative review of the essentials of our present knowledge of rheumatic fever is provided in this symposium of three papers: Nature of Rheumatic Fever by Maclyn McCarty; Prophylaxis of Rheumatic Fever by Edward A. Mortimer, Jr. and Charles H. Rammelkamp, Jr.; and Treatment of Rheumatic Fever by E. G. L. Bywaters. The present theories of pathogenesis and the status of current research activities, the basis for recommendations in prophylactic programs, and an evaluation of the various forms of treatment are provided in an exceptionally readable and comprehensible fashion. The symposium will be of great interest to the practicing pediatrician and offers many practical and helpful recommendations concerning total management and specific therapy.
