ATRESIA OF THE VAGINA IN INFANCY

Cystic lower abdominal masses in female infants may be due to enormous distention of the upper vagina, secondary to either atresia of the vaginal canal or to an imperforate hymen.

Obstruction of urinary or gastrointestinal systems may result, and may cause the only symptoms.

Diagnosis can usually be made preoperatively by careful and adequate roentgenographic studies.

Safe treatment of the condition requires open operation for the establishment of an outflow tract.
