Those concerned with the care of premature infants should be alerted to a possible noxious effect of sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin®) when this drug is administered to very small infants in the first few days of life.

The relative effectiveness of 2 prophylactic antibiotic regimens on newborn infants whose birthweight was less than 2,000 gm. was the subject of a controlled trial which has just been completed in the premature nursery of Babies Hospital. Ninety-seven infants received oxytetracycline (Terramycin®) 5 mg./kg./12 hr. for the first 5 days of life.
