A review is presented based on 138 children with a proven diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus, including an analysis of the physical, electrocardiographic and roentgenographic findings. Operations on 116 of these children were performed with no deaths. Simple ligation with silk ligatures was used in 110 cases. There has been no instance of re-canalization. The criteria for diagnosis and selection for surgical correction are discussed.
