The serum of the premature infant contains material which inhibits bovine hyaluronidase. This inhibitor was found to be present to about the same degree in infants with and without retrolental fibroplasia and appeared to be unrelated to the severity of the disease.
The level of the physiologic inhibitor of hyaluronidase found in the blood of the premature and full term infant is approximately of the same order of magnitude.
