These 2 ICD chapters are considered to contain all causes of sudden unexpected infant deaths for this analysis. The "Symptoms, Signs, and Ill-Defined Conditions" ICD-6, ICD-7 and ICD-8, and ICD-9 included codes 780–795, 796, and 799, respectively; ICD-10 included codes R00–R99; "External Causes of Injury or Poisoning" ICD-6 through ICD-9 included codes E800–E999; and ICD-10 included codes V01–Y89. All remaining deaths are included in the "residual" category.
