US postneonatal mortality rates per 1000 live births for the ICD chapters "Symptoms, Signs, and Ill-Defined Conditions"(dark portion of bars) and "External Causes of Injury" (light portion of bars) and the residual postneonatal mortality rate (line) for 5-year intervals from 1950 to 2001. These 2 ICD chapters are considered to contain all causes of sudden unexpected infant deaths for this analysis. The "Symptoms, Signs, and Ill-Defined Conditions" ICD-6, ICD-7 and ICD-8, and ICD-9 included codes 780795, 796, and 799, respectively; ICD-10 included codes R00R99; "External Causes of Injury or Poisoning" ICD-6 through ICD-9 included codes E800E999; and ICD-10 included codes V01Y89. All remaining deaths are included in the "residual" category.
